GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – The legal community on Grand Bahama officially marked the opening of the 2026 legal year on Friday, January 16th.

Judges, attorneys, and court officials gathered for a symbolic march, followed by a church service focused on reflection, humility, and the responsibility of upholding justice.

The observance began early Friday morning in Freeport, with members of the judiciary assembling outside the Garnet Levarity Justice Centre before proceeding in a ceremonial march to the Pro-Cathedral of Christ the King.

There, members of the legal profession joined clergy for a service centered on renewal, integrity, and service.

Rector Kirkland H. Russell delivered a message reminding those in attendance that justice must be rooted in love, compassion, and principle — not position or power.

Attorneys in attendance described the message as timely, saying it served as an important reminder of their duty to serve fairly and ethically.

Several members of the Bar also shared their hopes for the new legal year, calling for greater efficiency, integrity, and continued improvements to the justice system.

Attorney General Ryan Pinder, who was also present, said work remains ongoing to strengthen the justice system, including reforms focused on rehabilitation and modernization.
