GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – The Grand Bahama Port Authority’s Building and Development Department oversees a wide range of responsibilities, including the inspection of construction projects, to ensure they comply with proper building codes.

Freeport takes pride in its rigorous building standards, which have contributed to the city’s reputation as a well-planned city.

Building inspector Nicholson Miller recently took us on a tour, offering an inside look at what goes into inspecting properties and why it’s so important.

“We would meet with the contractor, who would provide us with the approved drawings and those drawings were reviewed and approved by my department,” he said.

“We would review to ensure that what’s physically being constructed has been approved.”

On any given day, the department conducts anywhere from one to 15 inspections, each one crucial in maintaining Freeport’s high standards.

Miller admits after Hurricane Dorian, inspectors have identified several poor building practices.

To address these issues, miller and his team encourage contractors to uphold the highest standards during construction.

But at the heart of the inspection process is safety.
