NASSAU , BAHAMAS – In less than two weeks, officials said that eggs from the government’s Golden Yolk Programme will be on the shelves of your local grocery stores.
The goal of the multi-million-dollar investment, launched in 2023, is to achieve 100 percent local egg production, with a target of producing over 27 million eggs annually.
After some setbacks, officials told reporters on the sidelines of the Agri Expo opening on Friday, that residents should see movement before the month is out.
The government said they’ve not forgotten about the long-awaited Golden Yolk Programme, and according to agriculture officials, you should see actual eggs produced by the end of the month.
The Golden Yolk Programme was first announced in 2023 as part of the government’s broader food security strategy, amid global supply chain disruptions and rising food prices.
At the time, officials said the initiative would stabilize supply, reduce import dependence, and create opportunities for Bahamian farmers and entrepreneurs.
The project, however, faced scrutiny over delays and costs, with questions raised over its timeline and expenditure.
Golden Yolk consultant Justin Taylor said you should finally see eggs laid this month.

“We have 10,000 laying chickens, so we’re going to actually have pretty much like 6,000 to 8,000 eggs per day, OK, and then we’re going to actually have house number two, which will be an additional 8,000. So in total, we have 16,000. We’re going to gradually—actually, in about six months’ time—all of the poultry houses will be completed, and we’re going to move The Bahamas towards self-sufficiency.”
Over ninety percent of our food is imported, including eggs.
You may recall that last year, egg prices soared to over $10 per dozen early in 2025 due to U.S. avian flu outbreaks, prompting government intervention and partnerships with retailers like Super Value to slash prices.
Taylor said that the project will help to solve just that.

“Right now the dollar value is 12.2 million per year, so we actually import 27.2 million eggs per year.”
Other farmers won’t be left out, because training opportunities will be made available as well.

“We have a training initiative, and we also have a research initiative, and we were very resilient in terms of—we have all the islands—so it’s a program called the National Layer Program that the Ministry of Agriculture has implemented. So we actually have demonstration units throughout all of the islands of The Bahamas. I can say that Farmer’s Cay, Grand Cay, all of them pretty much are self-sufficient in egg production, and all of this is an initiative of the Golden Yolk Programme.”
