GRAND BAHAMA, THE BAHAMAS – Hundreds of Grand Bahamian women packing the Pearce Plaza Saturday morning for a free pap smear screening drive.

Health professionals on the island, along with members from the University of Miami, leading the potentially life changing medical drive.

Wife of the Prime Minister, Anne-Marie Davis says this drive falls in line with her ministry’s portfolio.

Mrs. Davis adding that she was pleased to see so many women taking this important step to get screened, adding that attendees will be able to get a better understanding of their health.

Research scientist at the University of Miami, Elizabeth Smith, says their leader has been coming to The Bahamas since 2009, adding this screening drive gives researchers the opportunity to gather vital information from the population as to what contributes to cancer development.

She says they partner with other countries in the Caribbean, including Trinidad, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

Smith says they came fully prepared for maximum efficiency.

Minister for Grand Bahama, Ginger Moxey, also on hand.

With a goal of serving 300 women, she says she was encouraged by the early turnout.
