HAITI – Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry officially resigned on Thursday as a new body tasked with forming the country’s next government was sworn in.

A newly formed transitional council, backed by other Caribbean nations and the us, was sworn in amidst heightened security measures. Gunfire near the national palace necessitated the venue change, as gangs threatened to disrupt the ceremony.

Henry had pledged to resign after being prevented from returning from Kenya, where he sought assistance to restore law and order.

Jimmy Chérizier, a prominent gang leader, warned of continued crisis if not included in governance talks. The United Nations described the situation in Haiti as “cataclysmic,” with reports of widespread violence and humanitarian concerns.
