HAITI – Haitian police said forty-three suspected gang members were killed during security operations in the first three months of this year, as authorities step up their fight against armed groups.

Police say thirty-two operations across several regions also resulted in the seizure of dozens of rifles, thousands of rounds of ammunition, drones and armored vehicles, while fifty suspects were referred to judicial authorities under a separate investigation.

But despite the crackdown, the United Nations said more than five thousand people were killed in Haiti over the past year, with gangs still controlling large parts of Port-au-Prince and displacing more than 1.4 million people.

Authorities say operations will continue, as security conditions remain dire across much of the country.
