HAITI – As rising crime and poverty grip Haitian households, many are turning to the resale of fuel as a means of survival.

Reuters reports that in Cap-Haitien, gas stations have limited operating hours, leading to reported fuel shortages.

Haiti’s recent surge in gang violence, particularly since February, has paralyzed Port-Au-Prince’s maritime and air connections.

Gang alliances, armed with weapons reportedly trafficked from the United States, have tightened their grip.

According to recent data from the United Nations integrated office in Haiti, over 2,500 people were killed or injured from January through March, marking a 53% increase from the previous three months.
