UNITED STATES – The U.S. Internal Revenue Service is now furloughing nearly half of its workforce, as the U.S. government shutdown enters its second week.

An updated contingency plan shows that only about 40 thousand irs employees, just over half, will stay on the job.

Most operations are closed, and it’s unclear which functions will continue.

The union representing IRS workers is warning taxpayers to expect longer wait times… delays in tax law updates, and growing backlogs. Extension returns are due next week,  making the timing even more difficult.

The Trump administration has warned that not all federal workers may be guaranteed back pay.
