ISRAEL – Israel’s Security Cabinet has approved a plan to take control of Gaza city as part of a five-point strategy to “defeat Hamas” and end the war.

The move confirmed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, includes disarming Hamas, returning hostages, and setting up a new civil administration.

The United Nations and leaders from the U.K., Australia, and Turkey have condemned the decision, warning it risks catastrophic civilian consequences.

Critics in Israel say it could endanger the remaining hostages and displace hundreds of thousands more Palestinians.

The Israeli military already controls most of Gaza but nearly all of its 2.1 million people are crammed into the remaining quarter.
