NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As the winter semester begins, Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) President Belinda Wilson has voiced ongoing concerns about human resource issues, school repairs, and communication with the Minister of Education.

Despite students returning to the classroom, Wilson says these issues need urgent attention.

Wilson highlighted that approximately 360 expatriate teachers are still awaiting reemployment letters, which are preventing them from opening bank accounts and conducting business. She has urged the Ministry of Education to ensure these letters are distributed.

While the Ministry of Education recently announced plans to integrate Junkanoo into the curriculum, Wilson raised concerns about the lack of a revised curriculum and the absence of resources and materials. She questioned the vetting process for the individuals coming into schools to assist with Junkanoo education.

In addition to these issues, Wilson criticized the handling of school repairs, stressing the need for ongoing maintenance rather than reactive measures.

Wilson also addressed Education Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin’s call for unity, stating that dialogue, communication, and consultation are necessary for progress.
