JAMAICA – Jamaica’s political leaders struck sharply different tones on Independence Day Wednesday.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness praised what he called progress under his Jamaica Labour Party, citing a major drop in homicides, better infrastructure, and a growing economy.

But Opposition Leader Mark Golding accused the government of presiding over stagnation, poor education outcomes, and institutional decay, warning that the promise of independence is slipping away.

Both leaders hinted at looming elections, with Holness urging citizens to help shape the nation’s future and Golding calling for leadership with honesty and integrity.
