GRENADA – The javelin throwers continued their tradition of getting the medal count started for Team Bahamas at the CARIFTA Games, and once again, they highlighted the opening session of day one.

Defending champion Taysha Stubbs – a freshman for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, won her third consecutive U20 girls title with a gold medal throw of 48.84m.

Right beside her on the podium was Kamera Strachan, who took bronze at 44.88m – her first CARIFTA medal in the U20 division.

It was redemption for Strachan, who won silver in the U17 division in 2024, but failed to make the team in 2025.

In the first event of the day, Akheel Williams won silver in the U17 boys javelin with a throw of 58.23m.

It was Williams’ second consecutive CARIFTA medal after his gold last year in Trinidad and Tobago.

In the U17 girls shot put, T’arjhanaye Green finished 7th with a throw of 11.30m while Alyssa Thurston was 8th at 11.05m.

The morning session also featured preliminary rounds of the 100m and 400m across all divisions, but you already know how that turned out.

CARIFTA SWIMMING

Day one of the 2026 CARIFTA Aquatics competition got off to a fast start for Team Bahamas with distance races – the 200m breast, 50m back, 100m fly and the 400m free relays.

One of the first in the water for the team was Nai’a Belton, who swam in the girls 800m freestyle – which is 16 laps in the pool.

Isabella Munroe, Logan Comarcho, and Isabella Cucurullo all came first in their 200m breast heats, setting them up for finals tonight.

At the end of session one, Sasha Lightbourne asked assistant coach Camron Bruney how the team was setup for Friday’s finals.
