NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A massive showing of support for a unified rush took place Monday night as major Junkanoo groups came together in a show of force. They set out to demonstrate what they say is their unified front in the face of a possible split in the upcoming Junkanoo parades.

Dion Miller – Chairman, JCNP
“Every group out here is selling their wares, selling some food, and we’re trying to really pull our weight, be independent, and try to fundraise for ourselves. We anticipate that it’s going to be a massive crowd out here to hear Junkanoo, to celebrate their group, and so I’m excited about tonight.”

A massive crowd turned out for the event. The unity rush comes at a pivotal time as the season is set to start with four parades on tap: two managed by the National Junkanoo Committee and another two under the JCNP’s banner. Regardless of how the season unfolds, the excitement for the event was as high as ever.

Dion Miller – Chairman, JCNP
“Groups are excited to be competing against each other in a soft, competitive way. So bragging rights are on the line. Like I say, this is the first one for the year, we anticipate we will do another one next month, and I’m just excited to get the show going.”

Rocardo Treco – Director, 1958 Valley Boys
“We felt it necessary to make sure we are here in support and show our solidarity and unity, even though we are fierce rivals. This is a serious Junkanoo committee man.”

The unity rush included the 1958 Valley Boys along with the Roots. Then came the Shell Saxons Superstars.

Toby Austin – Chairman, Shell Saxons Superstars
“You see down here a lot of folks coming in now, just trickling in, and so we just come to enjoy ourselves, have a rush, and support one another.”

Toby Austin – Chairman, Shell Saxons Superstars
“A lot of people are asking a lot of questions right, but in terms of the running of the organization and what’s going on, we’re in very good shape. We don’t have any issues. We are ready to come out on Boxing Day and defend our crown.”

Ending with one family, B groups also in attendance are planning a combined rush as well.

Trevor Pratt – Leader, Original Congos Junkanoo Group
“People are under the impression, believing that there is a separation in Junkanoo, but it’s not. So tonight we’re going to prove to everybody that the unity is among the Junkanoo groups.”

Philip Carey – Leader, Redland Soldiers
“This is about love and unity. This is exactly what this is all about. We’re here to represent as one country.”
