NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Honorary Consul Jenesta Messam serves the Bahamian government in the Turks and Caicos Islands and is the first in that post and first female but she does not want to be the last.

“We need to make our young girls aware that they are change makers and there’s a role in diplomacy for them,” she said.

“Research has shown that when women sit in parliament, when women sit in cabinet, they pass laws that are comfortable for the ordinary person so if we encourage our women to get into the role now it makes it easier.”

And while she gave that advice to the future, I asked her how it feels to be recognized for International Women’s Day.

“This is truly a humbling honor,” the honorary consul said.

“I’m elated being a mother of two adult daughters and raising granddaughters, looking  up to me. Being recognized on a world stage is truly an honor and I’m eternally grateful.”
