TOKYO – It seems obvious to say, but it’s not easy to transition from the short sprints to becoming a quartermiler – Printassia Johnson did just that – and eventually had top 20 finish on sport’s biggest stage.

At the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan – Johnson raced to a sixth placed finish in the second of three semifinals in 50.81 seconds.

While she missed out on one of the eight spots in the final, she did place 17th overall in the field.

In the heats, Johnson opened strong, running a personal best of 50.53 seconds in the heats to advance to the semis as the fastest non-automatic qualifier.

Johnson has joined elite company of bahamian women quartermilers with a time that entered the top five trailing only Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Tonique Williams, Pauline Davis-Thompson and christine amertil.

On Wednesday, for Team Bahamas action will be both on the track and in the field.

Kaiwan Culmer contests the triple jump, Keyshawn Strachan in the javelin, with Anthonique Strachan and Ian Kerr in the 200m.

Baseball

BJ Murray overcame a slow start to conclude the season as one of the top power hitters in the AA Southern League.

The Chicago Cubs prospect and Knoxville Smokies infielder led the league with a career high 89 rbi.

He also finished second in the league with a career high 20 homes, thanks to a late season surge from Cincinnati Reds prospect Ruben Ibarra who had three home-runs in the last three games of the season.

His career-highs in both power and run production, also came with a .242 average, significant improvement from last season when he hit .196 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI across AA and AAA.

Over the years, the Southern League RBI  title has been claimed by a few noteworthy players who went on to major league success like Nelson Cruz, Jose Abreu, and Evan Gattis.

Murray joined that elite company and continues to raise his profile as a future impact bat for the Cubs.

Tennis

At the urging of the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Culture – the Annual General Meeting and elections of the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association have been postponed.

Originally scheduled for September 13, the elections were halted after an injunction was granted by Supreme Court at the request of Bjorn Ferguson and Kenwood Kerr, former members removed from the association.

Ferguson and Kerr had previously won a court of appeal ruling in July that the BLTA failed to comply with its constitutional requirements–especially regarding notice of meetings, unpaid dues, and membership applications being wrongfully rejected.

The BLTA claims it acted in accordance with the court’s orders: a council meeting was held in august, outstanding dues were communicated and paid, memberships ratified, and notice of the AGM and elections was sent out.

Also, the AGM was scheduled to meet the court‐ordered deadline of October 20.

Former national team member Marvin Rolle looks to contend incumbent Perry Newton for the presidency.

No new date has been set yet for the AGM and election of officers.
