NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – The 15-year-old star shattered the meet record in the under-17 girls triple jump of 13.04 meters, a mark that surpassed the CARIFTA qualifying standard, the world under-20 qualifying mark, and the previous BAISS record of 11.89 meters.

Johnson’s performance also put her within a centimeter of the Bahamas Junior National record.

On the track, the 100-meters had some of the day’s most electric moments, including a new BAISS record in the under-15 boys.

Many of those 100M races were ran under wind aided times but QC’s Andre Flowers was able to break a 22-year-old meet record with his time of 11.18 seconds.

The field events also produced several other CARIFTA qualifiers.

Temple Christian’s Dream Watkins and Queen’s College athlete Keely Deveaux both cleared the qualifying mark in the under-20 girls long jump with leaps of 5.65 and 5.61 meters respectively.

Charles W. Saunders’ Bryson Rolle cleared 2.05 meters to win the under-20 boys high jump and surpass the CARIFTA standard.

NBA

Both Deandre Ayton and VJ Edgecombe’s teams were shorthanded in Monday night’s NBA action – but both also stepped up in wins.

Ayton and the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 120-106 at home in Los Angeles.

He had 14 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double, his first since February 24, while shooting 7 – 11 from the field in 34 minutes.

It was his first double double since February 24.

Meanwhile, VJ Edgecombe was back in the lineup after missing three games with a back contusion and helped the Philadelphia 76ers to a 139-129 win over the Memphis Grizzlies at home in Philadelphia.

With Tyrese Maxey sidelined, Edgecombe took over point guard duties and finished with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in 34 minutes, shooting 7-15 from the field.

Philadelphia exploded for 41 points in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

World Baseball Classic

Bahamian pitching continues to make an impact on the international stage and Chavez Fernander is a prime example.

Fernander represented Great Britain for the second time at the World Baseball Classic this year, taking the mound against one of the most powerful lineups in the tournament.

In their 9–1 loss to Team USA, Fernander faced a star-studded group of major leaguers including Toronto Blue Jays playoff hero Ernie Clement, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Kyle Schwarber, Alex Bregman and Aaron Judge.

Fernander was also part of the 2023 World Baseball Classic pitching staff alongside fellow Bahamian Tahnaj Thomas.

In that tournament, Fernander delivered a scoreless inning in Great Britain’s 7–5 win over Colombia.

The right-hander was a 35th-round draft pick by the Detroit Tigers in 2018.

He spent six seasons in the organization and climbed as high as triple-a during his minor league career and spent the last year pitching in the Puerto Rican Winter league.

Wenty Ford is still the only Bahamian pitcher to break through to the majors with the Braves in 1973.
