NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A judge has awarded $10,000 in damages to a former police reservist who was accused of attempted rape after he wasn’t tried in a reasonable time.

Anthon Lightbourn Sr was charged with attempted rape in 2004.

The following year, Lightbourn was committed to stand trial.

However, the matter was never brought to trial.

Prosecutors eventually dropped the attempted rape charge in March 2023.

Justice Camille Darville-Gomez ruled that Lightbourn’s right to a fair hearing within a reasonable time by an independent tribunal had been infringed.

She awarded Lightbourn $10,000 in vindicatory damages.
