Jussie Smollett’s Conviction In 2019 Attack Overturned

ILLINOIS – The Illinois Supreme Court on Thursday overturned actor Jussie Smollett’s conviction for staging a racist and homophobic attack in 2019.

The court ruled 5-0 that a special prosecutor should not have intervened after initial charges were dropped in exchange for Smollett forfeiting $10,000 and completing community service.
The decision did not address Smollett’s innocence claim but highlighted the injustice of voiding agreements defendants rely on.
Smollett had been sentenced to 150 days in jail, probation, and $130,000 in restitution after a 2021 conviction for disorderly conduct.
