HAITI – Kenyan police and members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force are beginning to leave Haiti as a new United Nations-backed security force prepares to deploy to the country next month.

More than 200 Kenyan officers returned home this week – part of a transition from the multinational security support mission to a new Gang Suppression force expected to include about 5,500 personnel.

Bahamian officers also started returning home earlier this month, with officials saying the country will continue supporting Haiti through diplomacy and security training.

The transition comes as gangs still control more than 85 percent of Port-Au-Prince, with over 11 thousand people killed in violence since early 2024.
