Man Arraigned for Raping 83-Year-Old Woman

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A man accused of raping an 83-year-old woman during a break-in is behind bars. 

Prosecutors say 20-year-old Joel Strachan beat and raped the senior citizen when he broke into her home on June 19.

Three days before, on June 16, Strachan is accused of robbing a 30-year-old woman and trying to rape a after he broke into her home. 

Strachan faces charges of armed robbery, burglary and assault with intent to rape in relation to that incident.

Additionally, Strachan is accused of robbing a woman of $180, a watch, gold chain and a pair of shades at gunpoint as she walked along Davis Street on June 18.

Strachan was wearing an ankle bracelet as a condition of bail for an armed robbery charge when he allegedly committed the offenses.

He was not required to enter pleas to the charges when he appeared before Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain.

Bail was denied and he returns to court on August 15.
