NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A man convicted of a 2020 murder has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Marcello McKenzie learned his fate during a sentencing hearing before Justice Renae McKay.
The 38-year-old was convicted of the murder of Godfrey Sawyer on May 31.

Following the jury’s verdict, McKenzie, who was on bail, was remanded to prison to await sentencing.

Sawyer was on the porch of his home on Jackson Street, Nassau Village, when he got into an argument with two men on June 28, 2020.

Sawyer was shot during the confrontation and the men fled in a white minibus.
Police officers on patrol in Pinewood Gardens stopped the bus and arrested McKenzie and Jamaal Armbrister following a brief chase.

Armbrister was killed by a policeman in October 2022 during an alleged armed robbery.

An inquest is expected to be held into the circumstances of his death.
