Man Jailed for Nine Years After Raping Elderly Woman

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A man who raped an elderly woman during a crime spree has been jailed for nine years as part of a plea deal.

Joel Strachan, 22, pleaded guilty to raping the 83-year-old after he broke into her home on June 19, 2023.

Days before, on June 16, Strachan attempted to rape a 30-year-old woman when he broke into her home and robbed her at gunpoint of jewelry valued at $870.

Strachan tried to remove the woman’s pants with the intention of raping her, but she fought him off.

On June 18, Strachan held up a woman as she walked along Davis Street. He robbed her at gunpoint of $180 cash, plus he took her jewelry and sunglasses.

On December 31, 2022, Strachan robbed a woman of a Toyota Wish car at gunpoint.

Strachan pleaded guilty to rape, housebreaking, assault with intent to rape, and three armed robberies when he appeared before Justice Jeanine Weech-Gomez.

In accordance with the plea deal, Strachan will serve nine years in prison, followed by two years of probation.

A probation violation will send him back to prison for one year.
