NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A man who held a girl captive in bushes for five days while raping her repeatedly wants his 20-year sentence reduced due to the delay in bringing his case to trial.

Lincoln Poitier kidnapped the 14-year-old daughter of a family friend in 2004, but he wasn’t brought to trial until 2023.

On January 3, 2004, with the permission of her mother, Poitier took the teen to a mall in New Providence where he bought her a Baby G-Shock watch.

After leaving the mall, Poitier drove the child to bushes near Airport Industrial Park where he restrained her with handcuffs,  tied her to a tree and gagged her mouth with duct tape.

Poitier returned and raped the girl multiple times.

The teen escaped after she was able to slip out of her restraints due to severe weight loss.

Poitier remained at large until his arrest in 2007.

He was committed to stand trial in 2009 and arraigned in the Supreme Court in 2016.

Due to delays in bringing the case to trial, Poitier’s lawyer Marianne Cadet suggested a sentence in range of 10 to 12 years.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor Terry Archer argued that the sentence should stand due to the nature of the offense and Poitier’s extensive criminal record.

The panel of Justices of Appeal Milton Evans, Sir Ian Winder and Gregory Smith have reserved their decision.
