MEXICO – At least 13 people are dead and nearly 100 others injured after a passenger train derailed in Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca, according to the Mexican Navy.

Officials say the train, carrying more than 200 passengers, left the tracks while rounding a bend near the town of Nizanda, sending dozens to area hospitals.

President Claudia Sheinbaum says five people remain in serious condition and confirmed senior officials are on site as the attorney general opens an investigation.

The Interoceanic Train, linking Mexico’s Pacific and Gulf coasts, is operated by the navy and was launched two years ago as part of a major regional development effort begun under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
