Mitchell: Poverty Level Hits 47%

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Forty-seven-percent of Bahamians are living below the poverty line, according to the Minister for the Public Service and Foreign Affairs, Fred Mitchell.

Mitchell appeared on the Our TV show, On the Record this week.

Addressing the vacant post of American ambassador to The Bahamas, Mitchell says overall, it does not affect international relations.

And as it relates to the public service, the minister says some 47% of Bahamians are living under the poverty line.

He says without revenue, the country cannot go forward. But he says one way to address this issue, is to ensure that the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes.
