NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A woman jailed for mowing down a pedestrian and failing to stop is seeking a reduced sentence.

Altanese Rolle faced a potential maximum of 10 years behind bars when she pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter in the death of Sandy Rolle.

He was walking to work at 2am on February 14, 2022 when he was struck by Ms Rolle who fell asleep at the wheel of her car while driving along John F. Kennnedy Drive.

The car was unlicensed and uninsured and Rolle didn’t have a driver’s license. Ms. Rolle was sentenced to three years and six months amd ordered to pay $20,000 in compensation last August.

Her lawyer Dr. Glendon Rolle told the Court of Appeal that the sentence was too harsh and should be reduced. By contrast, prosecutor Cashena Thompson said the sentence should be upheld.

The Court has reserved its decision.
