NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Unregulated Communities are not a new issue, but this year they once again grabbed headlines after two shantytowns were torn down. Our Joshua Williams has covered this extensively and has this report.

2023 saw the Davis administration attempting to deliver on its promise of dealing with the age-old shantytown issue… and they took action in the fall, the Ministry of Works and Family Island Affairs announcing that there were some 15 unregulated communities in the capital.

The first to be demolished was the Kool Acres shantytown. But in a surprising turn of events, the community went up in flames hours before demolition.

With both shantytowns now demolished, residents in these unregulated communities continuously pleaded with the government to give them more time.
