UNITED STATES – Southwest Airlines is making a big change to its customer of size policy, just as the carrier prepares to end open seating and move to assigned seats starting January 27th 2026.

Up until now, travelers who needed more than one seat could wait until the day of travel to request a complimentary extra seat.

Under the new policy, passengers will have to proactively purchase that additional seat at the time of booking.

The airline says the cost will be refunded after travel, but only if the request is made within 90 days.

Southwest says the change ensures safety, comfort, and guarantees space on crowded flights.

Customers who wait until arrival at the airport to address their seating needs may be forced to pay upfront or be rebooked on a later flight.
