VATICAN CITY – Thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square Wednesday with eyes glued to the skinny chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, but black smoke was the only sign. That means no Pope just yet as cardinals failed to elect a new leader on the first ballot.

It’s the most diverse group of voters in church history with 133 cardinals from 70 countries – many of them appointed by Pope Francis.

They’ll try again Thursday – voting in total secrecy until someone earns the two-thirds majority.
