NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The country’s top court has granted bail to a man accused of murdering his nephew after finding a judge was wrong to conclude that he would interfere with witnesses if released.

A three member-bench of the Court of Appeal headed by President Milton Evans allowed Alfred McKinney appeal against a decision by Justice Joyann Ferguson-Pratt, which refused him bail for the November 6, 2024 shooting murder of Christian McKinney at Finlayson Street.

Bail was set at $25,000. As part of the bail terms, McKinney has to wear an ankle monitor, sign in three times a week a police station, surrender his travel documents to the court and not interfere with his niece, Antinique McKinney, who is a key witness in the case.

Prosecutors allege that she saw the accused chasing his nephew moments before he was found unresponsive with gunshot wounds to the abdomen.

McKinney also allegedly told his girlfriend, Ashley Johnson, that “he had shot Christian in his belly.”

Johnson, however, has since recanted the statement in an affidavit that was presented in the appeal.

Johnson alleged that she was coerced into implicating McKinney after being plied with alcohol.
