NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The government is taking a significant step toward reforming the justice system with the upcoming presentation of the Parole Act to Cabinet.

National Security Minister Wayne Munroe shared an update on the legislation’s progress, revealing that it will be reviewed by law reform before being finalized and presented for Cabinet approval.

The Parole Act promises to overhaul the current system, which automatically reduces inmates’ sentences by a portion. Under the new act, no time will be automatically reduced. Instead, inmates will serve their full sentence, with parole becoming conditional. If an inmate violates parole or commits a new offense, they will serve the remainder of their sentence.

Munroe clarified that the act will not apply retroactively, though long-term inmates may opt into the new system, provided they agree to forfeit any remission already granted.
