MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA – Preparations for the 49th CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting have been underway for some time in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the Our News team visited the convention center ahead of the opening as the country’s armed forces prepared for a packed meeting.

From The Bahamas in the north, to Suriname and Guyana in South America, CARICOM is comprised of states considered developing countries.

With the exception of Belize, Guyana and Suriname, all members and associate members are island states.

This year’s theme is “People, Partnerships, Prosperity: Promoting A Secure And Sustainable Future”, reflects CARICOM’s four pillars: Economic Integration, Social Development, Foreign Policy Coordination, and Security. They are all topics that will be a part of the agenda for Caribbean leaders.

Delegates will also address climate change and climate financing, food and nutrition security, regional and transnational crime and security, including the ongoing crisis in Haiti, youth engagement and digital innovation amongst other topics.

Now what is discussed over the next two days will influence CARICOM’s external engagements, including the upcoming Africa–CARICOM Summit, and may also affect global negotiations on climate finance and trade.

As it relates to goals for The Bahamas, Prime Minister Philip Davis has been extremely vocal on the world stage as it relates to climate financing.

Our delegation is also expected to focus on security collaboration, digital transformation, and food production initiatives.
