PERU – Riot police in Peru used tear gas to disperse protesters in Lima as thousands took part in anti-government marches.

The demonstrators want embattled President Pedro Castillo’s resignation over allegations of corruption. The left-wing leader unexpectedly won power last year and is now the subject of six criminal investigations.

He denies any wrongdoing.

Peru faces a number of economic issues including spiraling living costs.

Castillo won the presidency, promising to narrow the gap between the rich and poor but congress dominated by opposition lawmakers has blocked many of his plans.
