NASSAU, BAHAMAS – All eyes are on the Golden Isles constituency ahead of the upcoming by-election, where at least two candidates are vying to represent the area. One of them is Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) candidate Darron Pickstock.

During a visit to the South New Providence community, Pickstock said he’s received a warm welcome from residents.

“This seat will remain gold,” he said confidently.

The by-election follows the sudden passing of Member of Parliament Vaughn Miller. Pickstock says his team has already been hitting the ground running to connect with voters.

While residents have been receptive, he admits there are lingering concerns about infrastructure.

“Some of the concerns are infrastructural in nature,” Pickstock explained. “We’re currently paving along Union Road, Spikenard Road, and Harmony Street, and we’ll soon move further west. The main Carmichael Road is also being paved.”

Pickstock says they’re focused on building on the progress already underway in the community.

Prime Minister Philip Davis recently underscored the importance of keeping Golden Isles “gold,” as the PLP intensifies its efforts on the ground.

It remains unclear whether the Free National Movement (FNM) will contest the upcoming by-election. The party previously ratified Brian Brown, who has been active in the community since 2011 and ran in the 2021 General Election.

Despite being a new face for Golden Isles, Pickstock insists he’s no stranger to politics.

“I began this journey back in 1998,” he said. “I served as chairman of the Progressive Young Liberals, chaired the Real Property Tax Appeals Board, and currently serve as a senator and executive chairman of the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation. This has prepared me.”

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Davis, Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper, Transport and Energy Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis, and other party officials joined Pickstock on the campaign trail, a move he says made a strong impact.

“Constituents were very excited to see the leadership on the ground,” Pickstock shared. “I’m very grateful for the support they’ve given.”

The PLP is expected to pause its campaign as the late Vaughn Miller is laid to rest. However, officials say the momentum will continue over the weekend.

“I’m here now, and I’m about progress,” Pickstock said. “I’m bringing energy to this constituency, and the people of Golden Isles have received me warmly, opening their doors and homes to me.”
