PM To Meet With Gas Retailers Association As Global Fuel Prices Rise

NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – The US-Israel-Iran war, having consequences that extend far beyond the Middle East, – the region a critical hub for global energy supply and shipping routes.

And here at home, there are growing concerns about the cost of living, from food prices, to fuel at the pump.

In fact, global oil prices have jumped from around 70 dollars a barrel earlier this year, to well over 100 dollars a barrel.

But the prime minister moving to reassure the public in a last minute briefing at his office Tuesday afternoon, saying your light bill will not be impacted by the crisis.

He told that briefing that he is also set to meet with the Bahamas Petroleum Retailers Association.

“That meeting is focused on one thing: how we work together ahead of the April 1 VAT reduction on food to bring costs down for Bahamian families. I want to hear their concerns directly, hear what they are seeing in the market, and hear what practical steps can help ensure that relief reaches the people who need it.” – Prime Minister Philip Davis

But rising fuel costs are just one part of the fallout – Davis also confirming national security has been tightened.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force increasing its presence – targeting illegal migration, maritime smuggling and other unlawful activity across the region, particularly with developments in Cuba. And he says they’re already seeing results.

“Over the past few days, RBDF personnel intercepted fifty-seven migrants in the Little Inagua area. Twenty-nine were apprehended on Monday, and a further twenty-eight were apprehended on Tuesday morning. They were transported safely to Great Inagua, and investigations are continuing.” – Prime Minister Philip Davis

On Monday, the opposition calling for a cap on VAT collected on fuel, arguing government should not profit from rising prices.

And while not addressing that proposal directly, Davis says government is actively responding.

“These are serious times.But this is also a time for calm heads, steady hands, and a responsible united team in government.Your government is watching these developments closely, and your government is responding.All option are on the table to protect  livelihood of Bahamians.” – Prime Minister Philip Davis
