PM Tours Hybrid Solar and LNG Power Plant in Abaco

ABACO , BAHAMAS – Soon, the island of Abaco will have its own hybrid plant combining both solar energy and liquefied natural gas.

Prime Minister Philip Davis, along with Energy Minister Jobeth Coleby-Davis and other energy officials, officially toured the site today.

The project, designed to integrate both renewable and conventional power sources, will be enhanced by battery storage for efficient, reliable power for Abaconians.

The project is being handled by EA Energy and its CEO, Earl Farquharson, explained the scope of work.

Another hybrid power facility is also planned for Eleuthera.

Here, solar panels have already been bolted into the ground, while other construction work continues at the site.

The project comes as the country continues to grapple with an energy crisis, fueled in part by aging equipment that has led to frequent blackouts.

The outages have frustrated residents and disrupted businesses, particularly on the Family Islands.

On Grand Cay, off Abaco, some residents have gone without power for weeks.

Energy Minister Jobeth Coleby-Davis says she understands the frustration that residents are feeling, adding that this new plant is a step in solving the crisis.

And on the eve of the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Dorian, for Prime Minister Philip Davis, it’s a reflection of how far the island has come.
