VATICAN CITY – The medical staff treating Pope Francis considered ending his treatment to let him die, after the 88-year-old was hospitalized with a prolonged respiratory illness.

Francis’ lead doctor, Sergio Alfieri, said the most critical moment was when the pope had a breathing crisis and inhaled his own vomit.

The decision to keep treating the pope was reportedly made by Francis’ nurse, who told Alfieri to “try everything”.

Pope Francis has since left the hospital after a 38-day stay, his longest since being elected.

Doctors have advised that the pope receive 24-hour medical assistance, during which he will return to work gradually.
