VATICAN – Pope Leo is expressing sorrow following the deaths of two people in what’s believed to be an Israeli strike on Gaza’s only Catholic Church.

In a statement signed by the Vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope says he’s “deeply saddened” by the loss and assured the local parish of his prayers.

While the message calls for an immediate ceasefire and renewed dialogue, it stops short of directly condemning the attack.
