NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Passengers passing through Abaco’s airport met with darkness Thursday as the facility is without a functioning generator.

Employees and passengers were forced to deal with the sweltering heat until power was restored.

The Leonard M. Thompson International Airport was in complete darkness Thursday following a power outage, leaving employees to have to carry out their duties in the dark.

In a video that’s making the rounds on social media, what can be seen appears to be a customs officer walking with a flashlight.

But what happened to the backup generator?

Our News can tell you the original backup generator has been down since hurricane Dorian.

Bahamas Public Services Union President Kimsley Ferguson said he reached out to Airport Authority officials but got no response.

He’s concerned about members being able to carry out their duties.

Our News contacted Aviation Director Dr. Kenneth Romer who said the outage had minimal impact on operations.

He says a new backup generator has been secured and is en route to Abaco.

But until the permanent fix arrives, he says a short-term solution has been identified.
