NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Nicole is miles away, but she left a mark on some islands. Now as the assessment and recovery process begins, a Bahamian studying how individuals and households prepare for disasters is honing in on the issue.
What does it mean to be prepared and how does one household differ from another? That’s one of the issues Trevor Johnson, a PhD candidate at North Dakota State University is examining.
While we know to stock up on canned goods and bottled water, Johnson says there’s so much more to how we prepare for a storm – but the problem is, there’s not much research behind it in this part of the world.
The extent of how we prepare for a disaster can be influenced by a number of factors, including finances.
