NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander, updating an audience of government officials, including the prime minister, religious leaders and the media on the latest crime statistics and strategies. It comes as the country takes a beating in international headlines – highlighting the double-digit murders for the year.

Prime Minister Philip Davis telling that same audience about investments in crime-fighting tools like better ankle bracket monitoring technology. He also sharing the realities of falling hotel occupancies, which he blames on bad press from the local media. He made a comparison to crime reporting elsewhere.

His response: More sensitivity from the local media who should see their roles as protecting the country.

There was also the issue of the U.S. Embassy’s level two advisory to Americans. He contends The Bahamas has been at level two for several years.

When questioned about his own party’s 2012 election billboards with the then murder count – which also captured international attention, he had this to say: The past is the past.
