NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of at least 20 years for a man convicted of raping a nine-year-old girl.

Kenold Romain was last month unanimously convicted of raping the child, who contracted a sexually transmitted infection.

His now 13-year-old victim told the court how Romain threatened to kill her and her mother if she told anyone what he did to her.

The incident happened in November 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prosecutors suggested that a sentence in the range of 20 to 30 years was appropriate in the case, while Romain’s lawyer suggested a sentence of seven years.

Justice Jeanine Weech-Gomez is expected to hand down her sentencing judgment on August 20.
