WASHINGTON DC, UNITED STATES – Protesters gathered in Washington on Monday in response to President Donald Trump’s announcement that he would deploy 800 National Guard troops and temporarily take control of the city’s police department, bypassing local officials.

This marks the second time this summer Trump has sent troops to a city without state approval, and he warned that Chicago could be next.

Trump described the move as necessary to “rescue” the capital from lawlessness, but city police data shows violent crime has actually dropped 26% this year. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser called the President’s claims misleading.

Demonstrators carried signs reading “National Disgrace” and chanted “Trump must go now.”

EUGENE ACHSTETTER – RETIRED CITIZEN, WASHINGTON D.C.
“Growing up in Washington, it’s very hard to see the city being captured by Donald Trump and making everybody live in fear. I don’t approve of it. I just think it’s a bad move, and the backlash is going to be really severe against him and his administration. That’s why I don’t feel safe in this city anymore because of what it’s doing to its citizens.”

KANGO KIAMA – RESIDENT, WASHINGTON D.C.
“We are already a really overpoliced city, and I feel like D.C. should be a state. We deserve representation just like people all over the country. People’s representatives from all other states come to Congress here, and we pay taxes just like everybody else.”
