NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Press Secretary Clint Watson said there are laws presently on the books that address rape, however, he said when it comes to the marital rape discussion, advocacy groups must speak up.

This is causing quite a stir with women advocacy groups as they feel they have been very vocal on the issue of marital rape.

Talks of criminalizing marital rape resurfaced this past week, after a new study from The University of The Bahamas showed that one in 12 married women had suffered some form of sexual assault at the hands of their spouse.

The study leaving many to question whether or not the government will introduce any new legislation to criminalise marital rape.
