NASSAU, BAHAMAS – This is the story of RBC Caribbean regional Vice President of personal and private banking Lasonya Missick, who used the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated world as fuel for her success.

She’s been a pioneer in her field by breaking barriers to become the first woman managing director for RBC Bahamas.

With over three decades of experience under her belt she now serves in a regional role, leaving behind a legacy for many young women to live up to.

In her 30 years in baking, regional vice president of personal and private banking for RBC Caribbean says the biggest challenge as an excelling woman has been being underestimated.

Missick says women are often not seen as being capable of handling leadership roles that require tough decisions being made, but she never allowed the difficulty to stop her.

Missick started off in retail baking as a part-time teller in Abaco.

She has journeyed from an entry level branch banking role to human resources, to eventually becoming the first female managing director for RBC Bahamas.

And now, she’s the first Bahamian in this regional role that covers 38 branches in 10 countries across the Caribbean.

But throughout her tenure, she says she enjoyed the support of other women.

“I think what happened in the early days was, usually there was one seat available at the table for a woman and so there was a component of everyone was trying to get to this one seat or this one opportunity and sometimes that may have caused some women to hold back a bit in terms of sharing what there experiences were and how they got there, but generally, for the most part, I think that i’ve always had some female leader that gave me advice or looked back and said ya know what I see you in me,” Missick says.

In this regional role, she’s hoping women under her see the possibility they can one day excel too.
