NASSAU , BAHAMAS – It’s the final day of March and that means that police month is ending, and so is our month-long police series.

On Tuesday, our Jasmin Brown introduced us to the side of the force that few of us ever see.

It’s the mouthwatering food and hard-working staff of the police canteen, who are responsible for dishing out hundreds of meals to officers and civilians every day.

The police canteen is one of several units offering support to front-line officers daily.

They are located on the grounds of the RBPF’s East Street headquarters, and it’s a place where not only officers and civilians, can buy what is undoubtedly some of the best meals on the island.

No one knows that more than Officer-in-Charge Chief Supt. Dornell Brown, whose team starts dishing out breakfast at 7:30 and ends with lunch at 2 p.m.

“Our soul purpose is to ensure that officers on duty or off, that needs a meal. There’s something here provided. It is at a cost, it’s not free.

Officers have the option of “Cash and go” or to run a charge account.

On any given day, the canteen is busy with workers from nearby businesses.

So what keeps them coming back?

The canteen chief said a menu that offers a mix of traditional Bahamian cuisine, to regional eats and of courses, providing healthy options.

Brown said that her staff of more than 20, which includes both officers, reserve officers, and civilians, work hard at regularly updating the menu.

“We sell everything that persons are interested in and enjoy eating.”

With that extensive menu, our Jasmine had to taste for herself along with her camera man Stevel.

Let’s say the fish fingers, cole slaw, steamed pork chop and peas and rice made for an unforgettable meal, and easy to see why it’s a force favorite.

“The police canteen is very much inviting, very much warm, very much caring. So I woild tell you to come on down. Bring your friends or your co workers to just try us out.”

Now the canteen is not only open to the public, the space is also available for events like baby showers, receptions, or meetings.

To do so, you need only make the request directly to the commissioner of police.
