BARBADOS – The Barbados-based Caribbean Climate Outlook forum (CARICOF) warns that cooling temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific may lead to a transition to La Niña, while the near-record warm tropical north Atlantic could intensify the 2024 Atlantic hurricane, Caribbean wet, and Heat seasons.

In its latest Caribbean Climate Outlooks Publication, CARICOF says this could mean more frequent and intense heat, tropical cyclones, and severe weather, with high potential for flooding and cascading hazards.

While unpredictable atmospheric conditions may moderate some extremes, severe drought continues in parts of the Caribbean, including Northern Guyana and Western Jamaica.

As the region moves into its cool season, high temperatures and humidity are expected to persist, though CARICOF says heat stress should decrease by December.
