CUBA – The remains of 32 Cuban soldiers killed during a U.S. military operation in Venezuela have arrived in Havana to be returned to their families.

The soldiers died during the U.S. raid to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, which Cuban officials say involved Cuban military personnel operating alongside Venezuelan forces.

Cuban officials and thousands of citizens gathered at the airport to pay tribute as the flag-draped remains were received during a solemn ceremony.

The Cuban government has described the fallen troops as heroes who died defending a “sister nation,” as tensions between Havana and Washington continue to rise following the operation.
