GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – February 11, 2023 was the eighth anniversary of celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science. On Grand Bahama, 16 women were recognized for their excellence and their inspiration to girls in the community.

On December 22, 2015, the United Nations General Assembly passed the resolution making every February 11 the International Day of Women and Girls on Science.

This year, in honor of the day recognizing women and girls in stem, the Grand Bahama Port Authority hosted the International Day of Women and Girls in a Science symposium, sponsored by Aliv.

The event honored 16 women in science in Grand Bahama and highlighted their position as role models in the community.

The event also included a panel discussion of women with backgrounds in studies ranging from meteorology to oceanography and aquaculture, to dentistry.

Chairperson of the Keep Grand Bahama Clean Committee, Nakira Wilchcombe tells us some of panelists during the symposium even had advice for government.

Dr. Charlene Reid-Morris is the owner and operator of Easy Dental Care, as well as deputy chief council for the City of Freeport. She was one of the 16 women honored at the event.
