SPAIN – At least 41 people are dead in southern Spain after a high-speed train derailed and collided with an oncoming train Sunday night, in one of Europe’s worst rail disasters in nearly 80 years.

Emergency crews were still working through the wreckage Tuesday, using cranes and heavy machinery to reach the most damaged carriages, as searches continued for those still missing.

The crash happened near Adamuz in the province of Córdoba, about 360 kilometers south of Madrid.

Emergency services say 12 injured passengers remain in intensive care, while experts are examining a possible faulty rail joint as a cause.

The Spanish Red Cross says rescue efforts were hampered by the remote, single-road access to the area.
